The prevalence and causes of low vision and blindness amongst learners at the Akropong School for the Blind in Ghana

Background: Low vision and blindness have significant implications, resulting in a generally reduced quality of life amongst the sufferers. Aim: To determine prevalence causes low learners at Akropong School for Blind. Setting: The study was conducted Blind, Ghana. Methods: A cross-sectional design used. Eye examinations included measurements presenting distance visual acuity (PDVA) with Tumbling ‘E’ LogMAR chart. Anterior posterior segments were examined an ophthalmoscope slit lamp. Results: Two hundred sixty-eight ( N = 268) comprising 157 (58.6%) males 111 (41.4%) females took part this their ages ranged from 4 to 43 years (mean standard deviation [SD] 15.79 ± 6.15 years). results indicated that 76.1% classified as blind 23.9% had vision. leading cause glaucoma (39.1%) followed by pseudophakia (21.9%) retinopathy (18.8%). most common based on pathology found ocular anatomical structures corneal opacity/phthisis bulbi (35.5%), (25%), cataract (13.4%) (10.8%). Conclusion: identified because avoidable diseases such glaucoma. This highlighted need adequate primary eye care services, equitable health workforce distribution awareness Ghana help prevent blindness.
